BACKGROUND INFO:
This book is from the Indian Tribal series that was published in the early 1970s. It gives a detailed history of the tribe, including their anthropological origins, their style of life and system of governance, their beliefs and practices and their relations with other tribes. Maps show territorial boundaries both historically and in the present day, including any migrations and relocations of the tribe. Photographs include both modern-day colored pictures and at least several early black and white historical photographs. These depict important people, tribal regalia, and views of early tribal life.
In order to write and publish the series, the input of each of the tribes was actively solicited. That, in itself, was very unusual. The series is no longer in print and it's becoming increasingly more scarce to find. It is becoming more widely sought after as interest in Native American history grows.
The home of the Havasupai lies deep in the Grand Canyon where they have lived at least since the 12th century. Their numbers are small and their land is limited. They speak the Yuman language and for centuries have occupied the area south of the Grand Canyon to Bill Williams Fork, and east of the Colorado River to its' tributary, Little Colorado, to the San Francisco Peaks and the Santa Monica River.
The Havasupai constituted the northeasternmost band of the Northeastern Pai Indian Tribe. They grew their crops of maize and squash, beans and perhaps one or two other domesticated plants in Cataract Canyon at 3,200 feet above sea level and at Indian Gardens in the Grand Canyon and at Moencopi Wash during the summer.
The book discusses their prehistoric culture, their clothing and shelter, their history during the Spanish times, during Mexican rule, during the United States subjugation, during the Civil War and the Walapai War from 1866 to 1869, the division of their lands, changes in their traditional dress and utensils, their interactions with the Hopi, the beginning of tourism, the effects of U.S. conservation policies, the advent of schools, attempts at conversion, the social and economic changes affecting the Tribe, the post World War II period, their present lives, the tourist trade, the fight for their lands and speculation about their future. Includes a bibliography.
At the time of writing, Henry Dobyns was Professor of Anthropology at Prescott College, in Arizona, and was former professor and chairman of the Dept. of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky. He received his own degrees from the University of Arizona, and from Cornell. He conducted anthropological research for the Hualapai, Havasupai, Papago and Pima tribes of Arizona. Robert Euler was a Professor of Anthropology at Prescott College, Arizona, had done extensive archaeological and ethnohistorical research among the southern Paiute, much of it related to their land claim case. He taught at several universities and was Curator of Anthropology at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
