    Description

The title of this book is "Alcatraz Indian Occupation Diary" by "Indian Joe" Morris. This book is signed/inscribed, and blessed by the author. This book chronicles his life from his early days on Blackfeet Reservation to the occupation of Alcatraz from November 20, 1969 through June 11, 1971. From November 20, 1969- Native Americans took over and held Alcatraz Island as Indian Land. The occupation was led by the Native American Group, Indians of All Tribes or IAT. I.A.T. claimed the Island by citing the "Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868) between the U.S. and the Sioux. The treaty returned to Native peoples all retired, abandoned, and out-of-use federal lands. When Alcatraz penitentiary closed in 1963, the U.S. declared the land as surplus federal property leading to activists reclaiming it. The occupation lasted for nineteen months and was forcibly ended by the U.S. government. Though the occupation was ultimately unsuccessful, it is considered by most American Indians to be the greatest Indian coup of the 20th century as it gave them hope for the future. He as also written/dedicated the book to his daughter, Linda C. Morris. Please see all photos for condition as well as content.
