Capped Bust Half Dollar (1815-1838) Large Diameter (1815 – 1828) After a hiatus in quarter production from 1807 to 1815, the Mint began to produce the denomination again. John Reich’s capped bust design already in use on the dime and half dollar was implemented. The obverse features a portrayal of Liberty with a cloth pileus with a band inscribed with LIBERTY. Her bust is draped with a gown secured with a broach. She is surrounded by the thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse depicted the heraldic eagle with a shield covering its breast. The bird is seen clutching an olive branch and arrows, symbols of peace and military might. Below is the denomination and above is both a ribbon with E PLURIBUS UNUM and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The denomination was produced sporadically until 1828 with a 27mm diameter. Small Diameter (1831 – 1838) In 1831 quarter production began again using John Reich’s design reworked by William Kneass with two notable differences. The new quarter was smaller in diameter and struck at 24.3mm. And, the reverse was absent the ribbon with the incuse E PLURIBUS UNUM above the heraldic eagle. This capped design was used until 1838 when replaced by the Seated motif designs. All examples were struck at the Philadelphia facilities and both large size and small sized capped quarters remain highly collectible today.
